Also known as Mohs micrographic surgery, Mohs surgery is a precise, tissue-sparing surgical technique for treating skin cancers. The goal of Mohs surgery is to remove as much of the cancer as possible, while doing minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Mohs surgery is typically used on areas where conservation of healthy tissue is priority, such as the face, nose, ears and hands, and is usually done on an outpatient basis with the use of a local anesthetic.
COMPREHENSIVE SKIN CANCER REMOVAL TREATMENT
During the Mohs procedure, the visible tumor is removed and a map or diagram of the cancer site is created. The remaining cancer-containing skin is then removed one layer at a time, and is immediately studied under a high-powered microscope until it is determined that all cancer has been removed from the area. Once the cancer has been removed, the wound is repaired with the most advanced reconstructive procedures.
Mohs surgery is an improvement to standard, local excision surgery, allowing surgeons to verify that all cancer cells have been removed at the time of surgery. This increases the chance of a cure and reduces the need for additional treatments or additional surgery. Mohs offers the highest potential for cure—up to 99%.
