THE DANGERS OF AT-HOME MICRONEEDLING

With so many methods of rejuvenation on the market, it’s easy to do your research and find what could work best in addressing your skin concerns. And if there’s the option to do it yourself rather than see a professional, most people will do so because they feel it’s the fastest and easiest solution.

While there are some effective face masks, solutions and products you can use on your own, there are other methods and procedures for skin rejuvenation—such as microneedling—that are questionable.

SHOULD I CONSIDER AT-HOME MICRONEEDLING?

Microneedling is a method that uses tiny, fine needles to pierce the skin. These tiny punctures help trigger collagen production, which results in a rejuvenated appearance free of acne scars, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation and enlarged pores. While typically done by an aesthetician, this treatment does have an at-home option—the dermaroller.

If you’re considering microneedling, you may be tempted to give the DIY option a try. Our specialists explain why this isn’t the safest option.

NEEDLE SIZE MATTERS

What most people don’t know is that not all microneedling treatments use the same size or length of needles. If you haven’t consulted with a specialist, you risk purchasing a dermaroller that is not designed for your skin type, or for correcting your specific imperfections. This can result in a treatment that doesn’t show any improvement, or worse, damaged skin or infection.

PROFESSIONAL TECHNIQUES

There’s a specific technique professionals use during microneedling treatments—and while you may think you’re using your dermaroller correctly, there’s a chance you’re still damaging your skin. Needles used in microneedling have to pierce the skin at the correct angle, and be inserted at a specific depth. Doing this incorrectly can cause irritation in the skin, or even scarring.

POST-PROCEDURE CARE

When people choose at-home microneedling, they risk the development of more skin problems. Without a specialist providing you with the correct post-procedure care, there’s no way to be sure of whether your products are safe to use after treatment. Not caring for your skin correctly or using products that are too harsh on newly treated areas can cause more problems in the long run.
