BOTOX OR DYSPORT?

Botox® and Dysport® are injectable neuromodulators designed to address cosmetic concerns. While they’re both well-known and trusted treatment options that have been around for quite some time, deciding which would work better for you may not be a simple task. Before choosing one over the other, learn how Botox and Dysport are similar—and how they differ!

COSMETIC INJECTABLE SIMILARITIES

Botox and Dysport are FDA-cleared to temporarily improve the appearance of crow’s feet lines and moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. These treatments target muscle contractions, therefore, they temporarily reduce activity in the muscles being injected.

Sessions generally take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes, but this may vary depending on the patient and the area(s) being treated. For both Botox and Dysport, the smoothing of unwanted lines and wrinkles can last up to four months.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BOTOX AND DYSPORT

While these neuromodulators are often used interchangeably, they do have minor differences!

Both Botox and Dysport are made of the same substance, botulinum toxin A, but they have a slightly different formulation. Because of the variation in formulas, patients may get a different result depending on the amount administered and treatment area.

When it comes to treatment areas, Dysport seems to have a wider distribution—which is great for patients who have a large number of lines and wrinkles. A Botox injection typically diffuses less and stays in its place, working best for smaller corrections.

The injectables also have a slightly different onset, with Botox results becoming noticeable five to seven days after treatment, and Dysport taking two to four days.
